pianist marvin rosen had a surreal experience the first time he heard the slovakian composer's piece, "namah," he said. "for 10-to 15-seconds of the song, i was totally transformed," said rosen. "i do not know how to describe it. i was in another world."

machajdik's music is tonal-melodic, spare to the point of minimal but without the iterative persistence of reich or the pummelling rhythmics of nyman. notes and chords are sounded and pecked at then left to resound. the music gives that sense of a slow motion flowering, bachian at one level, folksy at another, pentatonic and slav ... with a steady and simple beauty.

machajdik's tonal writing is unusual in today's music, and its expressiveness and absence of any affectation gives a sense of primality, as if one were returning to the wellsprings of harmony itself. a non-artificial musical language with nearly archaic sounds.

i've been listening to peter machajdik's new album "namah". this is a moving, contemporary classical album. i mention it here as one track is in collaboration with jon anderson. "sadness of flowing" is a 10-minute, multi-part piece by machajdik with vocals/lyrics by anderson. for me, this is anderson's best work of the last six years: it's a very delicate and intimate vocal performance and some of his better lyrics (reminiscent of "the spell" on the animation re-release)
